Growth in Norwegian seafood exports continues

The value of Norwegian seafood exports during July totalled NOK 4.9 billion, an increase of NOK 375 million, or 8 per cent, compared to last July. To date, Norwegian seafood exports have totalled NOK 37.6 billion, an increase of NOK 5.7 billion, or 18 per cent, compared to the same month last year.

“An increase in the amount of salmon exports and a continued high salmon price are the main reasons for the increased export value of Norwegian seafood in July. The average price for Norwegian salmon in July was NOK 40.60 and the global demand for Norwegian salmon continues unabated,” says Christian Chramer, Communications Manager at the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Norwegian salmon exports set new record

The value of Norwegian salmon exports in July totalled NOK 3.6 billion, an increase of NOK 358 million, or 11 per cent, compared to last July. To date, Norwegian salmon exports have totalled NOK 25 billion, an increase of NOK 4.5 billion, or 22 per cent, compared to the same month last year. The average price for fresh whole Norwegian salmon in July was NOK 40.60, compared to NOK 44.06 in July 2013. As in the previous month, the biggest markets for Norwegian salmon were Poland and France.

The volume of exports of Norwegian fjord trout in July totalled NOK 189 million, a decrease of NOK 24 million, or 11 per cent. To date, trout exports have totalled NOK 1.4 billion, an increase of NOK 194 million, or 16 per cent, compared to the same period in 2013. The biggest markets for Norwegian fjord trout are Russia and Japan.

Herring and mackerel exports down

Herring exports fell in value in July by NOK 5 million, or 4 per cent, to a total value of NOK 126 million. To date, the value of herring exports have totalled NOK 1.4 billion, down by NOK 104 million, compared to 2013. Russia and Germany are the largest markets for Norwegian herring.
Mackerel exports fell in July by NOK 20 million to a total of NOK 55 million. To date, mackerel exports have increased by NOK 243 million to a total of NOK 957 million. China and Nigeria are the biggest markets for mackerel.

Clipfish up, salted fish down

Exports of clipfish increased in value in July by NOK 33 million to reach a total value of NOK 214 million. This figure breaks down into NOK 101 million for saithe, NOK 97 million for cod and the remaining amount for ling, cusk and other white fish. The biggest market for clipfish made from cod is Portugal, while Brazil is the most important market for clipfish made from saithe.

Exports of salted fish, including fillets, fell by NOK 3 million in July, to a total export value of NOK 29 million, of which NOK 25 million was accounted for by cod exports. Portugal is the largest market for salted fish.

Growth in exports of fresh and frozen Norwegian cod

Exports of fresh Norwegian cod from fishers, including fillets, increased in July by NOK 21 million to a total export value of NOK 52 million. Exports of frozen cod, including fillets, dropped in July by NOK 47 million to a total of NOK 135 million. Measured in value, 99 per cent of fresh cod was exported to the EU, while 71 per cent of frozen fish was exported to the EU and 25 per cent to China.
